We attended site to investigate a York Chiller Gate Driver Fault Alarm. It didn’t take long to find Compressor 2 with an over-heated Motor Terminal Bolt and the system empty of refrigerant. We set about mechanically handling the compressor into a position where we could get access to the winding side of the terminal bolts. We replaced all 3 terminal bolts and seals.
We returned the compressor to the chiller and reconnected all services, replaced the Liquid Line Driers, Oil Filter and oil charge. We carried out a full pressure test and vacuum rise test which passed all ok. We charged the system with a virgin refrigerant charge and ran up the compressor.
All was good until around 60% FLA where the Gate Driver Fault Alarm occurred again. We concluded that the failed motor terminal bolt had damaged the IGBT’s. The replacement cost of the part from the manufacture was huge, so to be sure we swapped the Integrated Gate Driver IGBT Card with System No1, where the fault followed confirming our findings. The replacement card was put on order and fitted all ok.
